Partasah and Zefonith do love and miss each other, they just hold certain convictions that mean they can't actually interact without fighting. Such can family be. And, yeah, Partasah not letting Zef have any contact with Gilou was just trying to keep her from getting caught up in the feud rather than an emotional blackmail thing. But, since you read Passage, you know she eventually found out, got involved, and sided with Zefonith.

'Family delivers the baby' isn't an Aquaan tradition so much as a Thalassa one.

And, yeah, 'it' is the proper pronoun for an Aquaan kid. Gilou's not calling herself 'she' yet.
