Little kids are less interested in philosophy and more interested in hearing about your lizard ancestors.

You don't often get to see the ship-Aquaans, because those bodies are in the distant past and because colouring their backplates is a nuisance.

The kids are Mivlings - Officer Mivvi's cousins of some degree. The Mivvi clan has been around since the founding of Tethys and they never seem to leave the planet, so even with limits on family size there's still at least thirty of them running around. Which makes it a bit silly that Officer Mivvi tends to go by last name when he's got the most common surname on Tethys. I think it's just that he works for Jendolyn, who tends to last-name people, so he's gotten used to his surname being his identifier to the point of feeling weird when people first-name him.
