I've read various 'modern man falls into the future' stories.  He always completely accepts that he's in the future as soon as he's told, whether the teller has proof or not.  I guess pranks, props, and lying hadn't been invented yet.

In this, fanfic makes a lot more sense.  If your OC is a fan of Franchise and they fall into Franchise, at least they know what they're looking at.  ( Though I have a certain amount of Transformer bias - it would be hard to fake a house-sized robot running around and shooting lasers at things.  In more humanoid fandoms, does this happen?  Does Mary-Sue ever fall into Middle Earth and go, "Oops, I must have wandered into a LARP.  Sorry to interrupt your cosplay, but I need directions back to the main road." )
