Tal is used to Veran racism, which is a more pureblood/halfblood/mudblood type of deal: Veras embraces all colours, provided you are a single colour all the way through and are a 'pure' human with no bioengineering in your ancestry ( or at least not in any of your recent ancestors, since Veras was founded after longevity treatments became a thing. )

Gilou and Nephos don't care what Alpine thinks of people who look like them, since there's only one of him and he's got no power.

Start from the beginning of this arc.
Start from the beginning.

...You want "disdain", not "distain", in the last panel.

Although, since French still exists on Veras, and it has no qualms with dark skin...Should be interesting to see Alpine react to THAT sort of no-use-for-racial-distinction. (A single color all the way through...meaning no melasma?)

Bother.  Spellcheck, why did you not catch that?  Shall fix.

( As in 'not mixed-race'.  Which is a line that's been getting blurrier and blurrier over time, what with 'no more Earth' and 'what are you even using to define race' and 'get too specific and you run out of gene pool'. )

Now that I think about it...I wouldn't be surprised if you mentioned this before, but I realized (or at least recalled) that Veras is thinking of itself as preserving as many of the "old" visages of humanity as it can, like trying to preserve heirloom variants of particular plant species/subspecies. So I guess their condescension towards everyone else is based on being the closest to the source point. (How they valorized the source point, I'd like to know, as well as WHY they dislike Aquaans. At least, I hope they tried to craft something like a syllogism or other logical construct.)

It hasn't got into detail in the comic yet, just mentions that they are anti-bioengineering and anti-Aquaan, but they value history enough to break these laws, Zefonith says Verans cling to the past and find origins important, Javin snarks that Verans are experts at unquestionally keeping tradition alive, Alu talks about the Verans as holding themselves apart and needing to be dragged into the future.  And it's mentioned that Veran marriage involves genetics.  So at this point, official canon on Veras is mostly inference.  I probably got into the 'preserving humankind and its history' in the notes at some point.  We'll get into more Veras and why it exists when we go there.

( There is a certain amount of 'Because I say so' and making stuff up involved, given how much history was lost.  As for Aquaans, Aquaans lost their past and don't care, and they're bioengineers who like to spread gene-modding around.  That's going to clash against people who are big on preserving history and resisting change.  Throw in some 'traditional family values' and Veras has even more excuses to hate the polyamorous alien hermaphrodites. )

... No wonder Veran daughters are a hot commodity despite patriarchal traditions.
